When Simon Inglis wrote his book "The Football Grounds of Britain", he described Springfield Park as 'the other ground in Wigan', a statement that generations of football fans in the town would resolutely disagree with. At its conception Springfield Park was akin to a multi-purpose sports complex, and during its 102 year existence was home to five senior football clubs and two senior rugby league clubs.
