The Springfield Park Memorial
Wigan's Original Football Ground
When Simon Inglis wrote his book "The Football Grounds of Britain", he described Springfield Park as 'the other ground in Wigan', a statement that generations of football fans in the town would resolutely disagree with. At its conception Springfield Park was akin to a multi-purpose sports complex, and during its 102 year existence was home to five senior football clubs and two senior rugby league clubs. These pages have been produced to bring all the information from various publications together in one place. Research is still ongoing and will continue, therefore once you’ve read the notes check back now and again for updates to remind yourself of the “old place”. For younger supporters the notes and pictures will illustrate the original home of Wigan Athletic FC and hopefully show where the roots of the club lie, and indeed, how football in the town began. This is the original and most complete website covering Springfield Park.
