Today the land on which we all worshipped the bag of wind is well, basically a housing estate. There’s very little left to point any offcomer to Springfield Park, even the young ‘uns will find it difficult to envisage that there was ever a football ground in the area. The one reminder ofits former use is that the main road of the first phase is named Lyon Road after Latics legend, the late Harry Lyon, who scored 67 goals in the 1964/65 season giving him the record for the number of goals in a single season at Springfield Park. A fitting tribute.
On 22nd July 2009 after a media and internet campaign, Wigan Athletic announced that the West Stand at the DW Stadium was to be re-named THE SPRINGFIELD STAND in recognition of Latics former home.
The idea was first publicised by Bernard Ramsdale and brought to Dave Whelan’s attention by Paul Kendrick of the Wigan Observer, but the project was kept afloat by an army of fans across all internet sites.
